How to read this figure

Constable, step 1 is a statistic for a whole group of people doing rcmp salary, not a quote for any one job offer. It is pulled up by the highest earners more than a median would be.

What this number does not tell you

This number does not know your employer, your experience or your location — all of which move real pay more than the national average does. Treat rcmp salary here as a starting point for negotiation, not a ceiling or a floor.

Constable pay steps

After the Cadet Training Program you are hired as a constable at step 1 and normally reach step 5 within 36 months of service. The rates below are the annual rates published by the RCMP, as of April 1, 2024.

During the 26-week training program at Depot, cadets receive a recruitment allowance of CA$1,000 a week, up to CA$26,000 for the whole training period, paid every two weeks.

On top of the base salary

Regular members can receive service pay, allowances for specialised duties and shift premiums, and the RCMP pension plan allows a full pension after 25 years of service. Ranks of inspector and above are paid on separate, unrepresented pay scales set by the Treasury Board.

How this compares with other police officers

Across all police services in Canada, Job Bank puts the median wage for police officers below the rank of commissioned officer at CA$50.00 an hour an hour, roughly CA$104,000 a year for a full-time schedule.

How does rcmp salary compare with the rest of Canada?

At CA$71,191, rcmp salary is above the CA$59,900 that average salary in canada publishes for Canada as a whole — a difference of 19%. That gap is the first thing worth checking before comparing two job offers.

Step 5 or Step 1: how far apart are they?

On this page, Step 5 tops the table at CA$115,350, while Step 1 is the lowest at CA$71,191 — 1.6 times more. A gap this size is worth a second look before treating the figures as interchangeable.

What does "rates as of April 1, 2024" mean for rcmp salary?

The figures for rcmp salary come from Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Pay and benefits (police officer careers), with a reference period of rates as of April 1, 2024. Pay statistics like this one are not updated in real time: the underlying survey or register takes months to collect and process, so the number reflects pay around that date, not today.

Median vs. mean

The median is the middle value when every salary is lined up from lowest to highest: half earn less, half earn more. The mean is the simple average. A handful of very high salaries pulls the mean up without moving the median, so the median is usually the better guide to what a typical person earns.

Percentile

A percentile splits the distribution into 100 equal parts. The 10th percentile is the value only a tenth of people earn below; the 90th percentile is what only a tenth earn above. Looking at several percentiles shows the full spread, not just one average.

Pay scale

A published table of fixed pay points or bands that an employer, usually in the public sector, must follow for a given role — for example an NHS band or a police rank. Pay within the scale usually rises with time served rather than being negotiated case by case.

Collective agreement

A pay and conditions deal negotiated between an employer or employer group and a trade union, binding on everyone it covers. Public-sector pay scales are usually set this way, which is why they change on a fixed schedule rather than whenever an individual employer chooses.

Reference period

The point in time, or the stretch of time, that a published figure actually describes. Pay surveys take months to collect and process, so the reference period is usually well before the date the figures are released, and always before the date you are reading them.
